GURARA FALLS
Niger State
The Gurara Falls are located 76 kilometers away from Minna. Its source is located in Kachia, Kaduna State, and empties its volume into the River Niger at a village called Dere, near Muye, in Lapai LGA.
The Gurara River and Falls hold deep cultural significance for the local Gwari (Gbagyi) people. According to oral history, the falls were named after two powerful local deities, Gura and Rara, to whom the communities living around the area once offered sacrifices.
This practice continued for centuries until a European expedition team "discovered" the falls in 1925 and subsequently developed the area into a recreation center. The site remains intertwined with local folklore, adding a layer of mystique to its already captivating ambiance.
A Tale of Two Seasons
The appearance of Gurara Falls changes dramatically with the seasons, offering visitors two distinct experiences.
Rainy Season (May to September): During this period, the Gurara River swells, and the falls transform into a thundering, powerful cascade, approximately 30 meters high and 200 meters wide, creating a spectacular, misty display of nature's raw power. The surrounding vegetation is lush and green, making for a dramatic backdrop, though the water can be muddy.
Dry Season (October to April): The dry season offers a more tranquil experience, with less aggressive water flow, revealing various rock formations and smaller, clear pools where visitors can safely swim in designated areas. This season is ideal for picnics on the flat rocks at the base of the falls, sunbathing, and family outings.
