FARIN RUWA WATERFALLS

Nasarawa State

The Farin Ruwa Waterfall originates from an amazing height of over 150 meters with a water volume of about 50 cubic meters. The whitish appearance of the spray emanating from the force of the waterfalls accounts for its name 'Farin Ruwa', which means 'white water’ in the Hausa language.

The waterfall is about 30 kilometers from Wamba, and 120 kilometers from Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State.

A Staggering Drop and Natural Splendor

Farin Ruwa is one of Nigeria's highest waterfalls, with water dropping a remarkable total height of approximately 150 metres (492 feet) over the edge of the Jos Plateau escarpment. This impressive vertical drop is a major highlight, exceeding the height of the more widely known Victoria Falls, which measures around 108 metres during its descent.

The immense force of the water creates a mesmerizing spectacle and contributes to the falls' potential for generating over 40 megawatts of electricity, a testament to its raw power.

The area is more than just a single cascade; it is a complex of several waterfalls that tumble down in steps, surrounded by a virgin natural forest with diverse wildlife and plant species.

The mountainous environment in the Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State induces heavy rainfall during the rainy season (March to November), ensuring a significant volume of water and a truly spectacular display.

Note:

The journey is an adventure in itself, often requiring a combination of driving and a significant hike, including crossing streams. Visitors should be prepared with essentials like a good camera, water, and appropriate clothing and footwear for hiking.

While the site offers a peaceful escape and a chance to connect with nature, visitors are advised to exercise caution and heed safety guidelines, as certain areas can be deep and dangerous. Tour guides are typically available to ensure safety and enhance the experience. Farin Ruwa Waterfalls is a magnificent destination for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurers looking to explore one of Nigeria's most stunning, albeit less-known, natural treasures.
